The Structure of the Ministry of Justice
The Ministry of Justice is the centre for the formulation of the Government's judicial policies. In addition to its responsibilities in the organisation of judicial matters, staff and services, it carries out administrative functions which are closely connected with the judicial function both in civil and criminal matters such as:
The management of the notarial archives, supervision of the professional bodies and guilds, the administration of court records, international co-operation in both civil and criminal matters and investigation of applications for pardon to be put to the President of the Republic.
The Legislative Office reports directly to the Minister. It carries out research into, and itself puts forward, proposals for legislation in its sector of competence.
On instructions from the Minister Research Commissions [IT] are set up from time to time. Their duties include the analysis of specific subject areas with a view to drafting new legislation.
In the prisons sector the Department of Prison Administration is responsible for the implementation of the order and security policies applying to the prison institutions and services and in the treatment of prisoners. It is also responsible for the administration of prison staff and the management of the necessary technical assistance.
The Ministry is also the competent body in the area of juveniles and in the management of staff and property relating to the juvenile justice system.
The new central structure is made up of Direct Collaboration Offices and by 4 Departments:
